A curiosity is the name of the peak and a certain inconsistency associated with it. Even before World War II, the peak was called Wielki Szyszak. The name was changed after the war, when German maps became available and it was interpreted as Śmielec. The name of Wielki Szyszak was given to another peak located slightly further west.
To add to the confusion, Germans and Czechs still call Śmielec... Wielki Szyszak. However, the "Polish" Wielki Szyszak is called Wielkie Koło in their country. So be careful if you use foreign guides on your trips to the Krkonoše Mountains, because it is not difficult to make a mistake!
You can get to Smielec along the red main trail from Karpacz or Szklarska Poręba. The closest other peaks are - to the west - the "heir" of the previous name, i.e. Wielki Szyszak, and Czech Stones to the east. The second route leads from the north, along the blue trail from Jagniątków, the current district of Jelenia Góra.
