Purple, emerald green and yellow – the colorful lakes located near the village of Wieściszowice are artificial reservoirs created at the site of pyrite mining.
They owe their unique color to the minerals found in the soil and rocks. The intensity of the colors varies depending on the degree of mineral saturation. Although they are a byproduct of human industrial activity, they made it to the list of 7 new wonders of Poland announced by National Geographic Traveler.
